Hidden villages nestled on rocky slopes, almost forgotten caravan routes, breathtaking nature and the impressive Ottoman stone bridges of Ali Pasha: all this and much more awaits you in the Zagoria Valley in southern Albania.

Highlights:

  • Breathtaking nature in the hidden Zagoria Valley in southern Albania
  • Homestays in small guesthouses – Experience rural Albanian village life up close
  • Cross the Dhembel Pass to get rewarded with stunning views of Enver Hoxha’s bunkers, Mount Cajupi and the Vjosa valley
  • The cobbled streets in the UNESCO World Heritage site of „The stone city“ Gjirokaster
  • The Vjosa River – one of the last wild rivers in Europe

The trails are well maintained and offer comfortable hiking conditions. You can expect daily hikes of 10 to 15 kilometres and altitude differences of 400 to 750 metres. The exception is the hike over the Dhembeli Pass, a more demanding undertaking that includes an exhilarating 1,250-metre descent to Permet.

After arriving in the Albanian capital of Tirana, you will travel to the south of the country. From here you will hike along rivers, over mountain passes and through blooming meadows and quaint villages where time seems to have stood still. Shepherds with flocks of sheep will pass by, sending you on a journey back in time to a Europe that has almost been forgotten. Green pastures and purple Judas trees in summer, the enticing colours of ripe fruit in autumn and the panorama of the Albanian mountains in the background – this is what makes a trip through southern Albania so special. Along turquoise rivers, you will come to waterfalls and a special place, the thermal springs of Benje.

Testimonials:

Our second trip with the wonderful Endrit from Zbulo to the Zagoria Valley. It was a wonderful 10 days. The hike is not as demanding as the Peaks of Balkan, but it is much less travelled. The hospitality and welcome from the host family were exceptional. Endrit lights up when he meets people, and they are drawn to him, so we were able to interact with the locals a lot, chatting and having coffee with them, which really enriched our experience. We felt incredibly well looked after and everything went absolutely smoothly. Highly recommended.

Day 08: Tirana – Transfer to the airport – B/-/-

Day 01: Arrival at Tirana airport. Transfer to Peshtan

Upon arrival at Tirana airport, a private transfer will be waiting to pick you up and take you to the charming village of Peshtan in southern Albania (3.5 hours away). Nestled on a gentle mountainside, Peshtan is a village steeped in history, having witnessed a significant battle during the Greco-Italian War and also home to remnants from World War II.

You will stay in a welcoming guesthouse and your local hosts, Mira and her husband, who are also teachers in the village, will give you a fascinating guided tour about the first battle and the axes lost in World War II.

Day 02: Hike Peshtan – Limare

Today you will start with a shorter hike from Peshtan to Limara. We start on a path that leads through open woodland to a pass from where you can enjoy great panoramic views of the valley flanked by mountains on both sides.

Along the way, you will pass the magnificent stone bridge over the Deshnica River, built in the 19th century by the famous Albanian leader Ali Pasha of Tepelena. Enjoy breathtaking views of the river valley and the majestic peak of Strakavec, which rises over 2000 m above the landscape, during the hike. After about five to six hours of hiking, including a final ascent, you will reach the welcoming village of Limara, where Nol, the village teacher, will accommodate you in his guesthouse.

With its timeless atmosphere and picturesque surroundings, Limara offers a glimpse into the past. As you explore the village, you will be captivated by the three imposing peaks of Hormova and Sheshi Malit, which form a breathtaking backdrop. The village is adorned with stone houses and an Orthodox church. The buildings bear witness to the struggle for religious freedom in the early 20th century, which was marked by their conversion from places of worship to cattle farms under communist rule. Limara is also home to hundreds of sheep and goats that graze on the local mountains and provide organic food for the village and the valley.

Day 03: Hike Limare – Doshnice – Hoshteve

On your hike from Limara to Hoshteve today, you will immerse yourself in the beauty of beech and oak forests and meadows full of colorful flowers. As you continue, you will leave the Strakavec peak behind you and see the Dhembeli massif on your left, which resembles a series of tooth-like peaks. Take a refreshing break by dipping your feet in the cool stream while enjoying your picnic.

The trail takes you through the almost deserted village of Deshnice, often considered one of the most remote villages in Europe. Your journey ends in Hoshteve, a village known for its large church and remarkable icons.

Day 04: Hike Hoshteve – Nivan – Sheper

Today’s shorter and easier route makes for a more relaxed hike, with great views of Mount Cajupi (2,145 m). We pass through the villages of Vithuq, Koncka, and Nivan to reach Sheper. Nivan, once the heart of the community, with its central square dedicated to William Tilman. Tilman, celebrated as “the last true explorer of the 20th century,” was a well-known British mountaineer and navigator who fought with the valley’s resistance against the German occupation during World War II.

We continue along the path through an oak forest down to the river, where you can visit an old monastery and have the opportunity to make a short detour to another of Ali Pasha’s preserved stone bridges before reaching our last overnight stay with Antoneta and Mondi, a talented stonemason. In Sheper, we find a village where many formerly nomadic Aromanian shepherds were forcibly settled after the border with neighboring Greece was closed in the late 1940s. The dilapidated museum and nearby buildings are adorned with faded quotes from Marx and Lenin, a stark reminder of Albania’s complex communist past.

Day 05: Hike Sheper – Dhembel Pass – Permet

Today’s hike follows a trail that many consider to be the most beautiful in the region. It connects two valleys and leads through Dhembel to an altitude of 1468 meters. As you climb to an altitude of 660 meters, you will encounter wide meadows full of flora and fauna that have fed sheep and goats for centuries.

Upon reaching the pass, you will be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of Permet, the Vjosa River, and the Zagori Valley. After enjoying the view and the wonderfully peaceful atmosphere, you will begin the longer descent to Permet. The rocky path along the descent offers an extraordinary panorama. On the way, the village of Leuse is an ideal stopover to visit another Orthodox church decorated with ancient frescoes.

Day 05: Hike Petran – Lipivan-Trepozishte – Ogdunan – Thermal springs of Benje

The day begins with a transfer on a picturesque road from Permet along the magical, emerald-colored Vjosa River, a nature park that has already attracted the attention of superstars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, who has campaigned for its preservation. The Vjosa River is known as one of the last wild rivers in Europe.

The journey continues along a donkey trail, still in use today, up to an altitude of 800 meters, with great views of the Vjosa Valley and the north face of Mount Nemercka. From the summit, a new perspective opens up, allowing us a first glimpse of Ogdunan, Mount Fir in Hotova National Park, and the distant Mount Gramos, which proudly claims the title of the highest peak in southern Albania. From here, we descend towards the impressive Lengarica Gorge and finally reach a graceful Ottoman stone bridge and the famous thermal springs of Benje.

Day 06: Transfer from Permet to Sopoti Waterfall. Visit to Benje and the Langarica Gorge. Transfer to Gjirokastra

The view alone is worth the 45-minute drive to today’s starting point for the hike. The blue waters of the Vjosa have carved deep into the rocks below us, while the rugged Nemercka mountain range rises above the river. On the way back from today’s hike, another unique natural wonder awaits you at the neighboring entrance to the Langarica Gorge.

The warm thermal baths of Benje are said to have healing properties for various ailments. They offer us a wonderful change of pace after the last few days of hiking and allow you to relax in their sulfur-rich waters. Alternatively, you can venture a little further into the river gorge.

Day 07: Day trip to Gjirokastra. Transfer to Tirana

Gjirokastra – is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and known as the Ottoman rock city in Albania. You can visit old houses and admire their beautiful facades made of old wood and stone roofs. Gjirokastra is also the birthplace of Ismail Kadare (internationally renowned Albanian writer) and Enver Hoxha (the notorious communist dictator). As the city has survived various historical phases well, it can seem somewhat controversial. Visitors describe the view of the city as “fairytale-like.” Afterwards, a transfer will take you to Tirana. Overnight stay in a hotel.

Trail Information

Difficulty

Three moderate hikes of 4 to 6 hours in the lower mountain ranges end with a fourth, longer day crossing the Dhembel Pass. At the end, there are two optional shorter hikes to the Sopot Waterfall and in Gjirokaster.

Transfers

Airport transfers are in private vehicles.

Guest houses

Four simple, clean, and cozy homestays with private rooms and shared bathrooms await you in the Zagoria Valley, followed by three nights in centrally located hotels with private bathrooms in Permet, Gjirokaster, and Tirana.

During the hike, you will stay in private rooms with host families. The rooms are simple and functional. You will sleep in twin rooms with shared bathrooms at the four host families and in double rooms with private bathrooms during the three nights in the city.

Bed linen and blankets, towels, shampoo, and other basic items are provided by the guesthouses. However, we recommend packing a travel towel just in case.

Food & Water

The food in this part of the world will be something you look forward to at the end of each day. The dishes are freshly prepared in the traditional way and feature a mix of Balkan, Turkish, and European influences. Guesthouses serve homemade bread with locally grown vegetables, dairy products, and eggs. Dinner includes traditional soups, meat dishes, vegetables, and cakes.

Vegetarians and special diets are no problem, as host families can offer vegetarian alternatives. However, the selection is sometimes simpler and somewhat limited.

Bring your own water bottle to refill on the hike. You can get water from mountain streams or tap water in guesthouses, both of which are safe to drink. If you have concerns about drinking untreated water, we recommend bringing water purification tablets. You should carry 2-3 liters with you on each stage.

Additional nights

Additional nights in Tirana before or after the tour can be arranged. You can add this directly in the booking form here on the page under “Add-ons.” You can also ask any further questions there. You will receive the most important general travel information and route description later on anyway.

Terrain during the hikes, navigation

The trails on the Hidden Valley Trek are often narrow and uneven, sometimes steep and rocky – especially on the descent from the Dhembel Pass. Because the markings are not as good as in the Alps and some trails are not used often, we will provide you with a GPS device to help you find your way around.

Although all paths are wide enough to be used by pack horses laden with luggage and do not pose any objective danger, there are a few smaller and mostly very short 5 m sections that run over Ottoman bridges and near the river and may be subjectively perceived as “scary” by people with a fear of heights. There have been no incidents to date, but we would like to mention this for the sake of completeness.

Time zone

GMT +1

Language & communication

Albanian. Many people in large cities speak English, but this is often not always the case in remote areas. However, in the guesthouses in the Zagoria Valley, there is usually at least one person in the household who speaks English.

Power outlets & electricity

220V, 50 Hz, two-pin round plugs (as in the US). In most villages, guesthouses have solar panels, which provide hot water and allow electrical devices to be charged. In some villages or on the mountain, there is also cell phone reception. Especially in Valbona and Theth, you can expect very good network coverage.

Money & currency

Lek in Albania, but euros are also often accepted. ATMs are available in Tirana, Permet, and Gjirokastra.

Packing list

  • Sturdy (ankle-high) hiking boots
  • A comfortable second pair of shoes or sandals
  • Hat or other form of sun protection, in addition to sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Lightweight rain gear just in case (95% of the rain falls in winter)
  • 2l water equipment
  • Daypack 20-35l
  • Swimwear/shorts (optional, but recommended)

Booking and cancellation policy
